A CNAME cannot share a name with any other record, so it cannot be used at the root of a domain. Many providers offer CNAME flattening or ALIAS records instead.
Records are cached for their TTL, so a changed CNAME record can take up to the old TTL to show everywhere. Lower the TTL a day before planned changes.
