About the What Is My IP

Public and private addresses

Your computer usually has a private address (such as 192.168.1.20) handed out by your router. Websites never see that one. They see your router's public address, which is shared by every device on your network. This page shows the public one.

If you see an address in 100.64.0.0/10 on your router's WAN port but a different one here, your provider uses carrier-grade NAT: many customers share one public address. That matters if you need to run a server at home or allow-list yourself.

IPv4 or IPv6?

If your connection has IPv6, the page may show an IPv6 address, because browsers prefer it when both work. That is normal. An IPv6 address identifies your network more precisely, as there is no shared NAT.

Reverse DNS and ASN

The reverse DNS name often reveals the provider and sometimes the town or connection type (for example dsl, ftth or a data centre name). The ASN is the network that announces your address on the internet. A hosting company's ASN here usually means a VPN or proxy is in the path.

What it can't tell you

  • Through a VPN, a proxy or iCloud Private Relay, you see the exit address, not your own line's.
  • Country comes from the regional registry, so it is where the block is registered, not necessarily where you are.
  • Frabs does not keep the addresses it looks up.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone find my home from my IP address?
Not precisely. An IP address points to your provider and roughly a region. Only your provider can link it to your account, and normally only for legal requests.
Why is my IP address different on my phone?
On mobile data your phone uses the mobile network's address, which is often shared with many other users through carrier-grade NAT. On Wi-Fi it uses your router's.
Does my IP address change?
Most home connections get a dynamic address that can change when the router restarts or the lease ends. Business lines and servers usually have static addresses.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number identifies a network that routes its own addresses on the internet, such as an ISP, a cloud provider or a hosting company.

Stop abuse leaving your servers

Frabs watches every VM's outbound traffic and stops spam, scans and floods before the abuse report arrives.
