How to use the IP & ASN Lookup

  1. 01

    Enter something

An IPv4 or IPv6 address, a domain (its first A record is used) or an AS number like AS13335.

  2. 02

    Look up

Results come from Team Cymru's IP to ASN service, which follows the global routing table.

  3. 03

    Follow up

Use the network name to find the right abuse contact or to group addresses by provider.

About the IP & ASN Lookup

What an ASN tells you

Every network that routes its own addresses on the internet has an Autonomous System Number. When you look up an IP, you find the AS that currently announces the prefix containing it: an ISP, a cloud, a hosting company or a large business.

The prefix is the block as it is routed, which may be smaller than what the registry allocated. The country and date come from the regional internet registry (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC or AFRINIC).

Why hosting providers use it

To know where traffic comes from. Floods and scans aimed at your network often come from a handful of hosting ASNs, and blocking or rate-limiting by AS is far easier than by single address. The reverse is also true: if another provider sends you an abuse report, it will name your ASN.

What it can't tell you

  • It shows the origin AS. Whoever actually uses the address (a customer of that network) is not public.
  • Anycast addresses (like 1.1.1.1) are announced from many places; the country is the registration country.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find who owns an IP address?
Look up its ASN to see the network that routes it, then use that network's WHOIS abuse contact. The end customer using the address is only known to that network.
What is the difference between an ASN and an IP prefix?
The ASN identifies the network; prefixes are the blocks of addresses it announces. One ASN usually announces many prefixes.
Where does this data come from?
Team Cymru's IP to ASN mapping, built from many BGP routing feeds and the regional registries' data.

Stop abuse leaving your servers

Frabs watches every VM's outbound traffic and stops spam, scans and floods before the abuse report arrives.
