VMs on a 64 GB Proxmox Host

After reserving memory for Proxmox, ZFS and 10% headroom, a 64 GB host fits about 11 VMs of 4 GB. Add your CPU and storage below.

Reserved4 GB Proxmox, 6.4 GB ZFS ARC, 10% headroom

RAM is counted 1:1 because it does not overcommit safely on KVM. CPU usually does (3 to 4 vCPUs per thread for general hosting), and storage often does with thin provisioning, so on most hosts RAM is the limit.

The ZFS figure assumes Proxmox VE 8.1+'s default ARC limit (10% of RAM, up to 16 GB). Without ZFS, that memory is available for VMs.

Questions

How many VMs can a 64 GB Proxmox server run?
About 11 VMs with 4 GB each, or 23 with 2 GB, leaving room for the host and ZFS.

Protect every VM on your Proxmox hosts

Frabs installs in one command on Proxmox VE and stops outbound abuse from any VM or container, without a reboot.
