VMs on a 512 GB Proxmox Host

After reserving memory for Proxmox, ZFS and 10% headroom, a 512 GB host fits about 110 VMs of 4 GB. Add your CPU and storage below.

RAM is counted 1:1 because it does not overcommit safely on KVM. CPU usually does (3 to 4 vCPUs per thread for general hosting), and storage often does with thin provisioning, so on most hosts RAM is the limit.

The ZFS figure assumes Proxmox VE 8.1+'s default ARC limit (10% of RAM, up to 16 GB). Without ZFS, that memory is available for VMs.

Questions

How many VMs can a 512 GB Proxmox server run?
About 110 VMs with 4 GB each, or 220 with 2 GB, leaving room for the host and ZFS.

Protect every VM on your Proxmox hosts

Frabs installs in one command on Proxmox VE and stops outbound abuse from any VM or container, without a reboot.
