Why Designers Use Lorem Ipsum

Lorem Ipsum is scrambled, altered Latin, derived from a passage of Cicero's writing from the first century BC, that has been used as placeholder text in publishing and design for so long that its origin has become almost a trivia question in its own right. It reads like real language at a glance without actually being readable Latin or meaning anything coherent.

The entire point is that it should not be readable as actual content, so that anyone looking at a mockup judges the layout, spacing and typography on their own merits rather than getting distracted by, or unduly influenced by, whatever the placeholder text happens to say. Real sentences, even placeholder ones, tend to pull a viewer's attention toward their meaning; Lorem Ipsum deliberately avoids that.

Even when real copy is available, designers often prefer to lock in a layout using placeholder text first, specifically so the design is not built around the length and rhythm of one particular piece of content. A layout that only works for exactly the copy it was designed with is fragile the moment that copy needs to change.

The one genuine danger is shipping it by accident, placeholder text left in a live page because nobody swapped it out before launch. It happens often enough that it is worth a specific check before anything goes live, precisely because Lorem Ipsum is designed to look plausible at a glance rather than obviously wrong.
