What the Flesch Reading Ease Score Actually Means

What the formula actually looks at

The Flesch Reading Ease score is calculated from just two things: average sentence length and average number of syllables per word. Longer sentences and longer, more syllable-heavy words both push the score down; shorter sentences built from shorter words push it up. Nothing about vocabulary difficulty, tone or subject matter factors in directly, only these two structural measurements.

Reading the scale

  • 90 to 100: very easy, understandable by an average 11 year old.
  • 60 to 70: standard, plain English, considered comfortable for most adult readers.
  • 30 to 50: fairly difficult, closer to academic or technical writing.
  • Below 30: very difficult, typically dense professional or legal text.

This is not a writing quality score

A high score means a text is structurally easy to read, not that it is well written, accurate, or engaging, and a low score does not mean writing is bad, only that it is dense. Technical documentation, legal terms and academic papers all reasonably score low without that being a fault, since the audience and subject matter genuinely require precision over simplicity.

Why it is still worth checking

For most general audience web content, aiming for the standard range is a reasonable practical target, since needlessly long sentences and unnecessarily complex words make content harder to skim and slower to read on a phone screen, regardless of how sophisticated the subject actually is. The score is a useful sanity check against accidentally over-complicating something that did not need to be.
