About the Disk Space & RAID Calculator

Why a 4 TB disk shows as 3.6 TB

Disk makers count in decimal units: 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Linux tools such as df -h and most operating systems count in binary units, where 1 TiB is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, and often still label them TB. The same 4 TB disk is 3.64 TiB. Nothing is missing.

RAID levels at a glance

Each RAID level trades capacity for protection. ZFS RAIDZ works like RAID 5, 6 and triple parity but checks every block, so it can also repair silent corruption.

LevelUsable space · survives
RAID 0All disks · no failures
RAID 1One disk · all but one
RAID 5 / RAIDZ1All but one disk · 1 failure
RAID 6 / RAIDZ2All but two · 2 failures
RAIDZ3All but three · 3 failures
RAID 10Half · 1 per mirror

Filesystem reserve

ext4 reserves 5% of each filesystem for root by default, so normal users see a disk as full before it is. On large data disks this can be lowered with tune2fs -m 1. ZFS should be kept under about 80% full for good performance.

What it can't tell you

  • Assumes all disks are the same size; with mixed sizes most RAID levels use the smallest disk's size for every disk.
  • ZFS figures do not include metadata, padding or compression.

Frequently asked questions

How much usable space is RAID 5 with 4 × 4 TB?
12 TB (10.9 TiB): one disk's worth goes to parity.
Is RAID 5 still safe with large disks?
It is risky above a few TB per disk: rebuilding takes days, and a second failure or read error during the rebuild loses the array. RAID 6 or RAIDZ2 is the usual choice now.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
1 GB is 1,000³ bytes; 1 GiB is 1,024³ bytes, about 7% more. The gap grows to about 10% between TB and TiB.
